I Can’t Stop Eating!

“I JUST CANNOT STOP EATING”

Sadly we here this a lot from clients prior to them coming into our programs.

Do this questions resonate?

– Do you find yourself compulsively eating and yet unable to stop?
– Do you feel like you need to keep eating something, even if it’s broccoli and chicken that you batch cooked for the following day?!

Here are the top three issues that create and perpetuate this problem.

1. YOU HAVE CREATED A DYSFUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH FOOD

Through years of dieting you see food as good food and bad food. So you’re either being good and feeling restricted, or you’re being bad and feeling guilty.
To get better results in your fat loss you think that the solution is to diet harder and get your diet more “perfect” – meaning fewer and fewer bad foods. Inevitably at some point you allow yourself “just a taste” and all hell breaks loose!
You feel guilty, and so compensate the following day or the following week by restricting yourself even further, which is even harder, and breeds even more fear and anxiety around food making the whole situation worse.

2. YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU WANT

Don’t think of a black cat…..Too late! There he is the purring black kitty!
When you’re walking around thinking to yourself “don’t think about food, don’t eat, don’t think of those cupcakes in the cupboards, don’t break your diet”..… You are programming your brain to think about food 24/7!

Your mind doesn’t know how to not think about something. So whilst you are acutely aware of what you don’t want, you have no idea what you do want.
So what do you want to do, feel, and focus on right now?

3. YOU HAVE NOT LEARNED TO MANAGE YOUR EMOTIONS

“My boss makes me angry”
“My job makes me stressed”
“My kids are driving me up the wall”
“My life is just so overwhelming”

These are all examples of how we can abdicate responsibility for how we feel to the outside world. Most people don’t realise that in any given moment, they have the power to change their emotional state from the inside.
Instead they believe the outside world, other people, events, circumstances, or life need to change before they get to feel good.
It therefore makes sense that if you can’t change how you feel from the inside, the best you can hope for is to manipulate your feelings from the outside using things like food, alcohol, cigarettes, even drugs.

Everybody needs to feel a sense of certainty that they can escape feeling bad, and ideally feel good. But if you can’t feel good, the next best option is to feel “less bad”.

That’s when you start looking for ways to numb yourself, anaesthetise yourself, or distract yourself with external means – and food is a very readily available option. Through repetition you condition your mind into the belief that food is the most rapid, reliable, and effective method for managing your feelings when things get too uncomfortable.

That’s why any time you feel like your life is out of control, you suddenly feel overwhelmed with a desire to eat.

SO – BACK TO BASICS!

1) Follow a SUSTAINABLE nutrition plan!

2) Focus on what you want, not what you don’t want!

3) Manage your emotions!

Oh and PS all this takes hard work. So get after it, work hard and work smart or remain the same!
